Nowadays the planet is suffering from pollution by carbon emissions brought about by industrialization and high usage of electricity from household appliances, businesses and other sectors. Every year the percentage of emissions goes higher and higher. As a responsible human being, it is right for you to do something for the planet in your little way.

Aside from environmental reasons, you should also try to limit the consumption of energy inside your home to have lower monthly utility bills. It means more savings for your monthly budget that can be allocated for other purposes. If you are interested in getting started, here are some tips on how to save electricity at home.

Make sure that your home is well ventilated

If you keep on using the air conditioning unit, especially during hot days, expect your electric bill to increase three to four times the average amount that you have been paying each month. It would be more convenient for you to install manual window openers on all of the windows inside the house. The use of manual window controls will make it easier for everyone in the household to open the windows to allow fresh air to circulate throughout the entire house.

Do things manually instead of using your appliances

This may be quite challenging if you are used to using your appliances to make your chores easier. But you can save a significant amount of electricity if you choose to do some of your tasks manually. One example is drying your hair. If you are not in a rush, you can skip using the blow dryer and instead use thick towels to dry your hair naturally. Instead of using the dishwasher, you can manually clean your plates, pans and utensils using a sponge, dishwashing soap and running water. For your laundry, you can hang it on a clothesline under direct sunlight instead of using the dryer. You can quickly adapt to making these small changes as long as you commit to doing your part.

Change your lighting to more energy-efficient options

Check all the rooms in your house to see if you are still using the traditional incandescent bulbs. If yes, you have to understand that they consume a lot of energy that contributes to your monthly bill. But do not worry because there are several energy-efficient bulbs that you can choose from. You may use halogens, LEDs or CFLs as replacements because it can help you save around 50-70 per cent on electricity each month. The good thing is that these bulbs do have a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting.

Lastly, make it a habit to turn off all lights and appliances when not in use. Many people are guilty of leaving the lights on when they go to sleep. Sometimes, the TV is turned on for almost twenty-four hours even though no one is watching. Also, unplug significant appliances except for the refrigerator when leaving the house, to avoid unnecessary consumption of electricity.
